How External Gear Pumps Work
Internal gear pumps and external gear pumps are very similar in pumping action. Both internal and external gear pumps go into and out of mesh to produce flow. In external gear pumps though, both gears are shaped the same and make each other rotate from a motor that drives one of the gears. Each gear is supported by a shaft with ball bearings on both sides of the gear. As the gears come out of mesh, the gears create expanding volumes on the inlet side of the gear pump. The liquid flows into the cavity and is trapped by the gear teeth when they turn. Finally, the meshing of the gears makes the liquid flow through the outlet port under pressure. The plus side to external gear pumps is that they are very quiet running and are often used for high pressure applications such as hydraulic applications.
